Comeback of a Classics – Puma Basket

19. Mai, 2017

Digging through the Puma archives, one particular silhouette will catch every Hip-Hop head’s attention: The Clyde. A sneaker that defines 90’s Hip-Hop and Streetwear like nothing else. But before the Clyde there was the Basket. Originally released in 1968, the Puma Basket began its life on the basketball court. Since then, it has made its way into our classic rotation of understated silhouettes due to its low profile, wearable shape. Constructed from premium leather , this low-cut shoe also features printed gold branding to the lateral walls and heel. Now the Herzogenaurach (Germany) based brand is giving the timeless silhouette an extensive comeback. With multiple versions including different premium materials, colorways and a platform sole, the iconic sneaker is well reinvented without losing it’s recognizable look.

„And They Say“ – Chance The Rapper over a Kaytranada production

16. Mai, 2017

Finally it’s here! After word got out that the Canadian producer and Chicagos very own Chance had collaborated on another track, months passed by without an actual release. While a lot of fans awaited the outcome of this promising project, both artists kept us waiting and instead went on to release collaborations with other artists. Only if you have been to one of Chance’s shows over the last year or so, you’d have heard a live version of the unreleased track.

Now Kaytra finally shared the Chance feature during his appearance on Pharrell’s OTHERtone Radio. When asked about the collaboration, the Montreal producer claimed he was “waiting on brother Chance The Rapper to send me the vocal parts.” Luckily it’s no longer unreleased and we can have a taste of this talented duo. Listen to the track below:

„Thanks Anna for letting me shoot the party“ – Frank Ocean captures MET Gala for VOGUE

11. Mai, 2017

One could say the annual MET Gala is the „Superbowl of Fashion“, as it’s considered to be the most important fashion event of the year. The originals purpose of the event was – and officially still is – to celebrate the start of a new exhibit at Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Every year the institute determines a certain theme or a designer, the exhibit is dedicated to. This year’s Met Gala went down last Tuesday. While this year’s theme was all around COMME des GARÇONS very own Rei Kawakubo, it was – as always – more about the number of A-List celebrities attending the event and of course their wardrobe of choice for the night. While most of the popular visitors took an extensive amount of time to pose in front of the numerous photographers at the red carpet, a reticent as ever Frank Ocean tried to sneak by and hide behind Rihanna’s voluminous dress. Even though RiRi was drawing a lot of attention, the „Blonde“ singer couldn’t avoid to be snapped by the Paparazzi a couple of times.

The rest of the evening he changed position to step behind the „Lens“ – as his latest song is also titled – to capture his impressions of the glamorous night with a Contax T3 35mm. He is old school that way, preferring the authentic analog grain of film over digital immediacy. Two days ago it came to light that it wasn’t all just for private pleasure, as Vogue revealed that they had sent Ocean to play Paparazzi for a special MET editorial. While Frank Ocean took on to his tumblr, stating „Thanks Anna for letting me shoot the party“, the delicate footage features beautiful analog photography of ASAP Rocky and his date Gwyneth Paltrow, Gigi Hadid, Zoë Kravitz, Gigi Hadid, Jaden Smith and more. Check out some of the pictures below and find the full coverage on Vogue.

Illa J gives a first impression of his new album „Home“

9. Mai, 2017

The Yancey’s have always been a very musical family. With Mom being a former opera singer and Dad playing bass in a Jazz band, the four kids were heavily influenced by music from the very beginning. Oldest-born James, who was gifted with an extraordinary perception of music at a very early stage of his life, started developing a special passion for Hip Hop along other genres soon and eventually started spinning records in the park at child-age. Back then nobody knew that kid would eventually turn out to become one of Hip Hop’s most important producers of all time, as he went on to pursue his musical passion and soon started producing music under the name of Jay Dee – and later J Dilla.

John, who’s the youngest of four, was naturally influenced by the music his older brother listened to and would soon nurture a passion and talent for music and especially Hip Hop himself. While music wasn’t his first choice from the start, as he went to Central Michigan University to play ball, a rather sad incident made him change directions. On February 10th 2006 James Dewitt Yancey died after suffering from a rare blood disease. After the passing of his brother, John decided to drop out of Central Michigan University, and continue the family’s involvement with music under the name of Illa J. It soon became clear that he didn’t pass on the Yancey Family’s musical talent. After joining Slum Village, a renowned rap group that was also formerly accompanied by J Dilla too, and releasing his musical debut „Yancey Boys“, a dedication to his older brother that also featured some Jay Dee productions, he started gaining some reputation. Followed by a second EP entitled 4 Past Midnite and a Slum Village project called „Evolution“ he collaborated with Frank Nitt, who also worked on Yancey Boys, for Sunset Blvd. before he released his last LP in 2015 simply called „ILLA J“ on Brookly based label Bastard Jazz Records.

Fast forward, last Friday our friends of Jakarta Records just announced that Illa had now signed with them and that the Detroit based artist is about to drop his new album this summer. The Album called „Home“ is a pure dedication to the city he grew up in. While the music is entirely produced by L.A. based artist Calvin Valentine, Yancey expressed in a recent statement, that the album will be very soulful and –  a little surprisingly – contain a lot of singing, as he sees himself as singer / songwriter first and went on to reinforce his singing voice with vocal coach Betty Lane over the past several months. Read the full statement about his upcoming album „Home“ here:

„Singing was always a big passion for me..I was always fascinated at all the acrobatic vocal runs some singers do with their voice. To me it’s an athletic thing and I definitely see myself as a vocal athlete..and for that deeper understanding of my voice that I now have I have to thank my vocal coach Betty Lane. She literally helped me to push out the voice that had been waiting there for years, ready to come out, like „John use me, I’m your voice“ and It was always a goal of mine to make a project that showcases my singing. I see myself as a singer songwriter first, I just grew up in the generation of rap, so the 2 styles just fused together naturally. I started writing poems around 8 or 9 years old, then songs, and then raps. I eventually put it all together…22 years later…the journey to my heart , through all the ups and downs of my career trying to discover my voice, who I am, all my travels around the globe. It all leads back to Home, in the most literal sense. The house I’m sitting in front of on the video for „Home“ is the house my parents brought me home to as a baby. So for me it’s like going back to the original source, the original purpose. That purpose for me is to sing. That’s why this album is so special for me…and Calvin made the perfect soundtrack for me to take you on a soulful stroll through my hometown, Detroit Michigan aka Motown. Hope you enjoy! As Dank would say..“Bless up!!!!!!!!“

„Home“ will hit stores on June 30th, but you can already listen to the first track „Sam Cook“ on Jakarta Record’s Soundcloud!

Carhartt WIP x Perks And Mini (P.A.M.) Radio Club Collection

8. Mai, 2017

Pre-Internet, pre-Instagram, humans also communicated publicly with private names. For instance, the legacy of the name of a DJ, the nom-de-plume, the google username, and even the graffiti ‘tag name’ stems from one of the first forms of public communication over the airwaves: the CB or shortwave radio. Before pirate radio and chat-rooms, anonymous humans communicated with each other all over the globe via CB radio network, emerging in the 1920’s. Users such as “Cup Cake”, or “Old Milk Can”, would talk with “the Hairy Grape” or “Pork Chop” and “lady T-Bone”.

Cards confirming radio contact were shared amongst the community, sent to and from radio users and stations, in the beginning just featuring users names (e.g. “Cuddle Bug” or “Little Snake”) and, as the fad grew, featuring caricatures, cartoons, slogans and jokes. The ‘amateur’ graphics, often made by individuals, and their choice of names today represent an important form of folk art. Now streetwear giant Carhartt WIP and Melbourne-based Label Perks and Mini joined forces to draw inspiration from this almost forgotten Radio culture.

Perks and Mini (P.A.M) is a lifestyle brand based in Melbourne, Australia; their productivity branches into the realms of food, music, art, fashion, and graphics. Established in 2000 when Husband and Wife team Mischa Hollenbach and Shauna T fell in love. P.A.M’s distinctive graphics and excessive attention to construction and detail has gained a huge and well deserved international cult following.

P.A.M have a long list of collaborators (all visionaries in their chosen fields); friends who have a mutual understanding of the P.A.M dimension; Undercover, Mike Kelley, Fergadelic, Genevive gauckler, Soulwax (2 Many DJ’s) and Sofia Prantera (Silas) to name but a few. P.A.M. not only stands for Peace and Menace, Pizza and Mezze, Psilocybin and Mescaline; but also for independence, freedom, aestheticism, culture and fun!

With both entities having strong and vital boundaries to contemporary music culture the collaborative idea arose very organically and the whole project was accompanied by a joining together of renowned DJs of the P.A.M Paris (their new home base) environment to share music over the airwaves with DJ Sundae, IUEKE, Low Jack and DJ Perks himself among them.

carhartt-journaldoubleimagedesktop carhartt-journaldoubleimagedesktop (1)

For the limited collection the creatives made up three different Radio Clubs deriving from the cities of L.A., Rome and Athens with each one of them having their own signature graphic just like back in the days on the radio cards. Alongside the T-Shirts, Crewnecks, Longsleeves and Caps, a retro-inspired portable Radio was added to the composition. Check out the collection in full on inflammable.com!

Berlin adidas EQT Event & Fashion Week

20. Januar, 2017

Call it a day!

New Brand: The Hundreds

28. Dezember, 2016

The Hundreds Philosophie: People over Product. People over Product.

Nas im The Hundreds Rosewood (LA) Store
